In the second-to-last episode of Teacup‘s debut season, viewers discovered that the mysterious Assassin had been concealed within Valeria. After making its presence known to Nicholas, the Assassin switched hosts once more, immediately pushing Valeria into peril. (R.I.P., James’ mistress!) Unfortunately, this Halloween episode left us longing for some grotesque body horror (apologies to the gore enthusiasts), but it did set us up with a gripping cliffhanger leading into the anxiety-filled season finale.
As we rejoin the group of survivors, Ruben, McNab, and Donald are strategizing ways to destroy the alien tree, realizing that their attempt to burn the silo failed. Armed with a colorful liquid and a sturdy pair of gloves, Ruben tries to pull branches off the extraterrestrial trunk. He manages to grab one, but when placed in a jar, it swiftly disintegrates back into that candy-like substance.
Meanwhile, in the house, Maggie and James contemplate their chances of victory against an undead Assassin. In this moment, James decides to share his mid-life crisis, lamenting his persistent feeling of helplessness. (So that’s why you slept with the neighbor’s wife? Not sure that justifies it, buddy.) He expresses confusion about everything and asks Maggie if they could regain clarity someday. She can only respond with a tentative “maybe,” which he accepts for now.
Arlo suggests they trap the Assassin using a teacup, much like their mother did to eliminate a wasp in the premiere episode. Just then, “Nicholas” interrupts their conversation, luring Meryl outside. The Assassin tries to seize control of her body, but the distinctive rainbow eye effect doesn’t manifest. Instead, she retaliates by smashing Nicholas with a rock while Arlo rushes to find their parents.
Inside the kitchen, it becomes evident that Meryl is losing her sanity, prompting Maggie to point a gun at her daughter as the Assassin threatens to cut her throat. James breaks in, and both parents put on gas masks. They initiate “Project Drowning” (because anything found online must be truthful!) by dragging Meryl to a bathtub filled with water and submerging her. Once her body slackens, Maggie begins CPR. Initially, her efforts seem in vain until Meryl finally coughs up water.
Moments later, it appears that James is battling possession. He yells for Maggie and Meryl to RUUUUN, while the rest of the group discovers Valeria’s brutally mutilated body. (And there’s the gore!) With the Assassin now within James, he violently slams Ruben’s head into the ground before Maggie intervenes with a rifle. Frustrated, Arlo runs away while Maggie chases James into the barn with a syringe of ketamine. Arlo/Harbinger distracts the Assassin, giving Maggie the chance to inject her husband’s leg with the drug. Arlo reminds his mom about the wasp and the teacup. When the Assassin attempts to invade Maggie, she stabs it with a knife and just manages to force it into a deep freezer, while Ruben quickly covers it with heavy sacks. “He’ll suffocate!” Meryl protests. “I know,” responds their mother. (Say it isn’t so, Scott Speedman!)
Outside, the group splits the remaining colorful liquid into different containers. McNab drinks his down and carefully steps over the blue line — success! Everyone else follows suit, except for Ellen, who decides to stay behind with the animals. They hop into a van heading to the fire station, but Harbinger insists he must “activate the machine.”
On their way, they are stopped by a woman, the same mysterious figure who was searching for McNab earlier in the episode. Introducing herself as Carol, she is accompanied by a man named Milo. Everything seems fine until another vehicle careens into the scene, striking Carol and Milo. The new arrivals, Hayden and an unnamed woman, claim “the bastards are waking up” and “they’re everywhere.” They promise protection if the group joins them… but who are they really, and can they be trusted? Those questions will have to remain unanswered until Season 2.
Maggie lets out a sigh. “We’re not moving until you explain what the hell is happening,” she demands. Roll credits.
