On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks concerning Liz Cheney. Trump suggested that Cheney might not be a « war hawk » if guns were « trained on her face. »

These remarks were made during an interview with Tucker Carlson in Arizona, where Trump criticized Cheney, who had endorsed Harris, the Democratic nominee in this election cycle. He labeled Cheney as « a radical war hawk » that would potentially lead the U.S. into conflicts across « 50 different countries, » calling into question her foreign policy decisions.

Trump further stated, « Let’s put her with the rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her. OK, let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face. They’re all war hawks when they’re sitting in Washington in a nice building saying, ‘oh, gee, we’ll, let’s send 10,000 troops right into the mouth of the enemy.’

In response, Harris spoke to reporters in Madison, Wisconsin, asserting that Trump has intensified his violent rhetoric towards political adversaries and that his suggestion should be considered disqualifying. « This must be disqualifying, » she emphasized.

Harris, who has frequently warned that Trump would be « obsessed with revenge » if re-elected, argued that his attack on Cheney shows he is « unqualified to be president. » She praised Cheney as « a true patriot » who prioritizes the country over party lines, contrasting this with Trump, whom she described as someone viewing his political rivals as enemies, bent on vengeance, and becoming increasingly unstable.

Cheney, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, served as one of two Republican members on the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot. This event was instigated by a mob of Trump supporters attempting to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, an outcome Trump unfoundedly attributed to widespread voter fraud. Notably, Liz Cheney’s father, former Republican Vice President Dick Cheney, has also publicly supported Harris over Trump in this election.

Trump has consistently labeled the Cheneys as warmongers and criticized former Vice President Dick Cheney’s foreign policy during George W. Bush’s administration.

In a separate development, several former aides to Trump have condemned his remarks directed at Cheney. During an appearance on CNN News Central, former White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin described Trump’s comments as « unconscionable. » She questioned how Republican leaders, many of whom previously considered Cheney a colleague and friend, could fail to denounce such statements, calling them « dangerous and escalatory. »

Later, Trump defended his comments on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, « All I’m saying about Liz Cheney is that she is a War Hawk, and a dumb one at that, but she wouldn’t have ‘the guts’ to fight herself. »

Additionally, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced that her office is looking into whether Trump’s statements constituted a legal violation. « I have already asked my criminal division chief to start looking at that statement, analyzing it for whether it qualifies as a death threat under Arizona’s laws, » Mayes told NBC affiliate 12NEWS.
