James Van Der Beek has received a diagnosis of colorectal cancer.

The 47-year-old former star of Dawson’s Creek has revealed that he has been quietly confronting this serious health challenge and took his time before sharing the news publicly.

‘I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately handling this diagnosis while taking steps to address it, thanks to the incredible support from my family,’ he stated in a recent update. ‘I have reasons to be hopeful, and I’m feeling good.’

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer originates in the colon or rectum, which are significant components of the intestines within the digestive system.

Despite this distressing news, Van Der Beek, who is a father to six children—Olivia, 14; Joshua, 12; Annabel, 10; Emilia, 8; Gwendolyn, 6; and Jeremiah, 2—with his wife, Kimberly, remains dedicated to his family.

‘We stopped trying to avoid the chaos a few kids ago, so it has become a beautiful mess,’ the star of Varsity Blues shared in an exclusive interview in 2022. ‘Spending one-on-one time is crucial. It’s important to have those special days and memorable experiences with my kids. There’s nothing quite like sharing a fun or significant moment with them—whether at a football game or a concert. We create an environment where they can ask questions, sharing their thoughts about the world and their place in it. It’s endlessly intriguing.’

Even with so many distinct personalities in the household, the proud father emphasized their close-knit bond. ‘There is a tremendous amount of love. Of course, they annoy each other at times, and I occasionally have to act as counselor or referee,’ he commented. ‘Overall, they genuinely care for each other’s happiness and well-being, and the dynamics always seem to change.’

‘The best friends from last month might be connecting with a different sibling now,’ Van Der Beek elaborated. ‘It’s fascinating to witness how their relationships transform, especially with a larger family. What intrigues me the most is that they often bond with the sibling who is least close to them in age.’

In 2020, the family relocated to Texas and has enjoyed their time there since. ‘We are much more in tune with the natural cycles of the seasons and the moon. Just last night, we had a fire to celebrate the full moon, where everyone shared their wishes for change moving forward. We also started a garden. It has been a blessing for my mental health and for our children. This place truly feels like home,’ he shared.
