A follow-up to the Google Pixel Tablet has yet to be launched, but a variety of speculations from Android Authority suggest the existence of a Pixel Tablet 3. Initially, there was significant expectation that a Pixel Tablet 2 would debut this August alongside the Pixel 9 series. However, that did not occur, postponing the release of a sequel tablet until possibly 2025.
The anticipated third-generation tablet is expected to arrive in 2027, equipped with the upgraded Tensor G6 chip, which is rumored to be produced using a 3nm manufacturing process.
It appears that Google plans to include a second USB-C port with the Tensor G6. Currently, the Pixel Tablet has a pair of USB ports—a standard USB-C and a USB 2.0 connection situated beneath the pogo pins that connect to its dock. According to Android Authority, this new 3.2 USB-C port will be designated for ‘tablet only’ applications and will support DisplayPort output.
This additional port suggests that the Pixel Tablet 3 could serve as more of a laptop alternative. Reports indicate that the tablet might support up to four external displays—two directly through the ports and two more via daisy-chaining.
From a leaked collection of internal Google documents from the gChips team, it’s indicated that the Tensor G6 will be utilized in several upcoming Pixel devices, codenamed ‘Premium 26,’ ‘Base 26,’ ‘Fold 26,’ and ‘Entry Phone 27.’ These devices are likely to be the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro Fold, and the mid-range Pixel 11a.
Additionally, there is mention of a ‘Tablet Pixel 27,’ which would likely refer to the Pixel Tablet 3. Assuming that Google introduces a Pixel Tablet 2 next year, this could establish a two-year release cadence for the company’s tablets. This implies that the Pixel Tablet 3 may hit the market before the Pixel 12 in 2027, likely during the annual Google I/O conference in spring.
The documents also suggest that the Pixel 11a and the Pixel Tablet 3 will feature a lower-spec version of the Tensor G6 chipset. With Google reportedly transitioning from Samsung to TSMC for its chip production, questions arise regarding the development of a less powerful chip.
Sources imply that Google is exploring the possibility of salvaging functional parts from defective chips, which would inherently lower their performance. This appears to be especially relevant to AI capabilities, suggesting that certain AI functionalities might not be available on the tablet and the mid-range Pixel phone.
It is also expected that there will be variations in RAM configurations across the flagship Pixel series, the A-series, and the tablets.
While it’s evident that Google is strategizing the future of its Pixel lineup, many of these rumors may still be two to three years away from materialization. Interestingly, there is limited information on what the tech leader has planned for the Pixel 10 next year aside from the Tensor G5. It seems that next year’s Pixel devices might function as stopgap models until Google establishes its partnership with TSMC.
