Temple Hill Entertainment, known for their successful horror films Smile and Smile 2, is set to replicate that success with their latest project, Monitor, a screenlife horror inspired by a short film of the same title according to Deadline.

Monitor represents the first feature film effort from writers and directors Ryan Polly and Matt Black (“I Bet You’re Wondering How I Got Here”), who are adapting their earlier short film.

The film’s plot revolves around a group of social media moderators. When they decline to release a terrifying video, they become targets of a malevolent entity that begins to stalk them across all screens in their lives. The creature, which thrives on fear, hunts them down one by one until it achieves its goal: to escape the confines of their devices.

Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures, remarked, “Monitor captures horror in a way that feels both relevant and unnerving, addressing the daunting online world we traverse daily. Ryan and Matt are adept at crafting scares, and we eagerly anticipate starting production early next year.”

Writers Polly and Black shared their thoughts on the project, stating, “As our daily interactions with screens increase, it becomes evident that we cannot fully trust them. This anxiety is universal and provides fertile ground for a chilling new horror concept. Teaming up with Temple Hill has been a dream, and their track record in the genre is impressive. We are excited to bring this creature to life on screen.”

The producers have described Monitor as “The Ring for the social media generation.”

This screenlife horror film is primed to follow the path of Smile, which originally intended for a Paramount+ release, had an exceptional theatrical run, grossing over $215 million globally in 2022. It was also based on Finn’s short film, “Laura Hasn’t Slept.

Monitor is produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, and John Fischer for Temple Hill, alongside co-production from Nostromo Pictures (The Night Manager Season 2). Protagonist’s Dave Bishop and George Hamilton are serving as executive producers. This marks yet another collaboration between Temple Hill and Protagonist, who previously joined forces for the upcoming slasher film Clown In A Cornfield.

Protagonist Pictures will kick off worldwide sales at the upcoming American Film Market, with production anticipated to begin in spring 2025.
