It was only a matter of time before an older gentleman became smitten with the widow Matty Matlock.
In this week’s installment of the CBS series Matlock, Olympia tackles the case of Robert, a widower whose wife Sandy passed away years ago from legionella, and they hold the landlord of their apartment complex responsible.
Robert, portrayed by John Billingsley, is described by Olympia as an “eccentric” and “anxious” artist, prompting Matty to assign her new assistant the role of providing some necessary emotional support as they navigate the twists and turns of his legal situation.
The case indeed has its challenges, particularly because Jacobson Moore, the firm representing Robert, also counts the developer he is suing as one of Senior’s affluent clients. Instead of redirecting Robert, Olympia suggests creating a legal “firewall” between the two teams representing Robert and the developer.
All seems to be going well for Olympia and her team until Senior’s group presents evidence suggesting that the toxic resins Robert uses in his artwork might have played a role in his wife’s respiratory problems and subsequent death. This devastating news hits Robert hard, but Matty remains steadfast by his side, even assisting him as he sorts through his chaotic storage area in search of receipts that could absolve him. During this process, they uncover significant water damage, along with substantial black mold. When environmental agents determine that the developer neglected to maintain their plumbing properly, Robert is offered a $9 million settlement through mediation, in addition to the developer’s agreement to pay up to $300K to other residents affected.
However, Matty eventually realizes, too late, that Senior has quietly initiated bankruptcy proceedings against his developer client, rendering Robert’s settlement essentially worthless, although other plaintiffs will be compensated. After grappling with this disappointing revelation, Robert expresses, “Since I’ve enjoyed our time together, I was wondering if you’d like to do it again, perhaps at a restaurant.”
Matty, who still maintains her guise as “the grieving widow with a deceitful spouse and a troublesome grandson, » responds tactfully, “That’s very kind. If I were ready, you’d be the ideal dining companion. But I’m not looking to date just yet.”
As Matty begins to offer further apologies, Robert charmingly interrupts, delivering a wink and saying, “I’ve known you for less than a week. You haven’t broken my heart.”
His invitation followed a heated discussion between Matty and her very much alive husband Edwin regarding her heavy reliance on Alfie as her “man in the chair,” which has been affecting their grandson’s sleep and homework habits. They reconcile, and Matty agrees to lean on Alfie less, particularly during school hours!
In another subplot, Alfie accessed Olympia’s laptop and discovered four heavily redacted documents pertaining to Wellbrexa and their opioid litigation. Matty sets out to see the actual documents, necessitating that she fabricate a story about an ill (and subsequently deceased) dog to gain favor with Mrs. B for access to the document room. However, she finds nothing but an empty accordion folder in the necessary box. With Alfie’s help, they trace the slip that recorded the documents’ removal, but its signature is indecipherable. After comparing it with signatures from both Olympia and Julian, Matty discreetly takes a picture of Senior’s golf scorecard, discovering that the signature aligns! Now she must prove that he removed the incriminating documents….
Billy teased Sarah for not realizing that he has had a girlfriend for quite some time! Furthermore, Elijah informed Olympia that he cannot be with her while maintaining distance, leading him to work from the Dallas office for a while. At the end of the episode, Julian assisted his ex in channeling her frustration towards Senior by encouraging her to destroy several of his father’s treasured trophies and awards with a golf club.
